About Una Hakika

Una Hakika operates in the Tana Delta, one of the least developed areas in all of Kenya, yet mobile phone and internet usage is still surprisingly high. Our baseline survey for setting up Una Hakika revealed interesting insights into how residents of Tana Delta use technology:

  • 81% own mobile phones
  • 45% of those phones are internet-enabled
  • 81% live in households with multiple mobile phone users
  • 31% use the internet
  • 28% use Facebook

Mobile phones and the internet have proven to be ideal tools for communicating with large numbers of people who live in small communities spread over a large area with rough roads.

The key elements here are:

  1. Rumour reporting – Una Hakika subscribers can sign up and report rumours anonymously using SMS, though they can also do so through phone calls or by contacting one of the community ambassadors we have trained.
  2. Prioritization – No two rumours are created equal, so we have to prioritize which ones we address first, especially in an emotionally charged environment like the Tana Delta. This is a process we will focus on perfecting and managing through WikiRumours, with any reports concerning violence taking precedence.
  3. Feedback – Responsiveness is important for Una Hakika and we need to constantly communicate with subscribers who report rumours. This builds trust by demonstrating that we are taking action in a timely manner.
  4. Verification – Once we determine which rumours to address first, our next task is to uncover the truth. There are various ways to do this, and we’ll have to determine the best for each type of rumour. In some cases, the relevant authorities may know, while in other cases, consulting trusted sources or querying subscribers may yield the truth.
  5. Intervention – Finally, we need to not only verify rumours and respond to the individuals who initially reported them, but also to consider strategies for containing and countering false information on a community level before it can spread and do harm. This is where community partners such as chiefs, elders, youth leaders, and women’s representatives will be essential.

Una Hakika Community Ambassadors

Una Hakika aims to mitigate the harmful effects of misinformation, and our community ambassadors play a key role in this process. They serve as the human element in this humanitarian communication network. Participants are briefed on methods of reporting information accurately, and our ongoing training promotes keen observation and attention to detail when reporting. Their ability to compile and retain meaningful and relevant information so ensures that Una Hakika can act on reliable information.

Una Hakika staff supports community ambassadors as they develop their skills in cultural adaptation, so that they are able to work with people from diverse cultural and geographical backgrounds. This will enable them to report on as wide an accumulation of information as possible. They are also encouraged to foster their interpersonal skills, tapping into their respective communities through their networks of family and friends, and reaching out through local social functions to broaden their networks, all while maintaining strong and healthy relationships with community members.

How it works

WikiRumours is both a piece of software and an implied workflow for triaging and responding to misinformation and disinformation.


There are several unique types of user in WikiRumours, which has conditional logic associated with each user type:

Proxy Enters rumours on behalf of other users who may not have direct connectivity to the WikiRumours platform (i.e. intake from walk-ins, SMSes, voicemail)
Moderator Triages new rumours and assigns to community liaisons; can update rumour status

Administrator Varying levels of permission for modifying rumours, users, website content, etc.

Unahakika ni huduma ambayo inafanya kazi Tana Delta eneo moja ambayo iko nyuma kimaendeleo nchini Kenya. Cha kushangaza ni kuwa matumizi ya simu na mitandao ya kijamii iko juu. Utafiti tulio fanya kabla ya kuanza Unahakika ulitupa maelezo muhimu ya jinsi wenyeji wa Tana Delta hutumia teknolojia.

Simu na mtandao zimedhihirika kuwa vyombo muhimu vya kuwasiliana na watu wengi wanaoishi kwa vitongoji vidogo walio mbali pasipo na barabara nzuri.

VIPENGELE KUU VYA UNAHAKIKA

  1. Kutuma ripoti ya uvumi – wakazi wa Tana Delta wanaweza kujiunga na Unahakika, na kwa kutuma ujumbe mfupi wanaweza tuma ripoti ya uvumi waliosikia .Pia wanaweza kuwasilisha ripoti hizo kwa kupiga simu au kujulisha mabalozi wa unahakika waliofanyiwa mafunzo
  2. Kipaumbele – Ripoti zote za uvumi zinazo tufikia hazichukuliwi kwa usawa kuna zile tuna zipa kipaumbele hasaa zile zinazohusu mizozo kati ya jamii tofauti. Hii ni mchikatao tunazingatia tuwe kamilifu na kuitekeleza kupitia WikiRumours, na ripoti yoyote kuhusu vurugu huchukua umuhimu.Majibu-Majibu ni ya umuhimu sana kwa waliojiunga na Unahakika na wanaotoa ripoti za uvumi kwa hivyo Unahakika huwasiliana na waliojiunga mara tu wanapoleta ripoti ili kujenga imani na kuonyesha kuwa ripoti yao inashughulikiwa.
  3. Uhakikishaji – Baada ya kuamua uvumi upi utashughukikiwa kwanza linalofwata ni kubaini ukweli. Kuna njia nyingi za kufanya hivi na inabidi kutafuta ile mwafaka kwa kila aina ya uvumi. Kwa kesi zingine walio kwa mamlaka wanaweza saidia na zigine kuuliza mabalozi huzaa matunda.
  4. Kuchukua Hatua – Mwishowe baada ya kuhakikisha na kujibu kulingana na maelezo tuliopata, inabidi pia tuweke mikakati ya kuhakikisha uvumi wa uongo hujasambaa katika maeneo mengine na kufanya madhara. Hapa ndipo wadau kama vile chifu,viongozi wa vikundi vya vijana, wazee na viongozi wa wanawake huwa wa umuhimu.

MABALOZI WA AMANI WA UNAHAKIKA

Unahakika ina malengo ya kuzuia madhara yanayoletwa na uvumi naabalozi wa Unahakika wana kazi kuu kwa mchakato huu. Wanafanya kazi kama wawakilishi kwa mtandao huu wa mawasiliano. Mabalozi hawa wamepata mafunzo ya jinsi ya kuripoti habari yoyote. Mafunzo hayo hugusia jinsi ya kumakinika kwa utoaji ripoti na jinsi ya kuchuja habari yoyote. Uwezo wao wa kukusanya na kuhifadhi habari ya maana na umuhimu huhakikisha kwamba Una Hakika yaweza kuchukua hatua juu ya habari za kuaminika

Wafanyikazi wa Unahakika husaidia mabalozi kujenga maarifa ya kukabiliana na tamaduni ili waweze kufanya kazi na watu wa kutoka maeneo,tabaka na tamaduni mbali mbali.Hii huwawezesha kuripoti habari kwa wingi. Pia wanatiwa moyo waweze kujenga maarifa yao ya uhusiano na wengine, ili kuweza kuingiliana na wanavijiji kupitia mitandao ya jamii na marafiki pia kuwafikia kwa mikutano ya kijamii kuwezesha upanuzi wa mtandao wao. Yote haya huchangia kudumisha uhusiano thabiti na wanavijiji.
